Showtime enters The Vatican

It seems US premium cable network Showtime can’t get enough of the Vatican.

Two seasons into its historical papal drama The Borgias, with a third 10-episode season due in 2013, it has now ordered a pilot called The Vatican.

Directed by Sir Ridley Scott and written by Paul Attanasio, it is described as a contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics – set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church.

Sony Pictures Television is producing the pilot, which will start filming in 2013.

Showtime is rivaling HBO as the top premium pay network in the US, with a string of hits including Homeland, The Big C, Dexter, Nurse Jackie and the US version of Shameless. Forthcoming original series include Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex.
