The emergence of original programming on premium pay-TV channels Showtime, Starz and others has seen many new pretenders vying for the crown of HBO, still the flagship cable network in the US.
And to lay down a marker for 2013, HBO and its sister cable channel Cinemax have revealed details of the shows viewers can expect to see over the next 12 months.
HBO’s drama slate includes the third season of Game of Thrones (premiering on March 31 in the US), season six of True Blood, the second season of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom and the fourth season of Prohibition era-set Boardwalk Empire.
Is this the most envied drama line-up in television? Possibly so.
HBO is also lining up Parade’s End, the BBC coproduced miniseries based on Ford Madox Ford’s novels, for a February run.
Over on Cinemax, new action series Banshee (from True Blood’s Alan Ball) is due to launch on January 11, while Strike Back will be on air this summer. This is the third season that will be coproduced with Sky1 in the UK and the fourth overall.
