Broadcaster ITV has acquired the forthcoming drama, due to debut on US cable channel FX on Wednesday, following a deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution.

Furthermore, ITV has made a two-year commitment to screen the series, which will have its UK premiere later this year.

The story follows the arranged marriage of two KGB spies, Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell), who pose as Americans in 1980s suburban Washington, DC against the backdrop of the Cold War.  The couple have two children who know nothing of their parents’ true identity.

The acquisition of The Americans marks the first US drama that will air on ITV’s flagship channel since Pushing Daisies first aired in April 2008.
