Dr Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray and Dracula will come together in Penny Dreadful, described as a psychosexual horror series that is set in Victorian London and will begin filming in London in the second half of 2013.

The series “weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation,” the network said.

It is created, written and executive produced by John Logan (Gladiator). Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and Pippa Harris (Call The Midwife) will also executive produce under their UK label Neal Street Productions.

The series commitment from Showtime reunited Logan and Mendes, who previously worked together on James Bond’s most recent big screen outing, Skyfall.

Meanwhile, Showtime has revealed the original drama series that will form part of its 2013 schedule. The sixth season of Californication began earlier this month, while the third season of The Borgias starts in April.

Dexter returns for an eighth run in June, the same month that will see the premiere of new drama Ray Donovan.
