Syfy gets Defiance

UK paynet Syfy is following in the steps of its sister US cable network by scheduling the launch of forthcoming fantasy sci-fi drama Defiance.

Syfy in the UK will launch the series just 24 hours after its debut on Syfy in the US in April.

Set in the near future, the story follows groups of aliens and humans who must learn to co-exist peacefully in a town called Defiance.

What will set this drama apart from others, however, will be the simultaneous roll-out of a computer game, also called Defiance and set in the same world, developed by Trion Worlds. The live action series will be set in Defiance in St Louis while the game will take place in San Francisco.

Though the  series and game share an interconnected world, they each have stand-alone narratives that mean they do not need to be experienced at the same time.

It is also a coup for Syfy UK to secure rights to air each episode so soon after it is on in the US as this serves to keep viewers in front of their television screens, rather than search for the same content illegally online.

The series, produced by Universal Cable Productions, is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives) and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica).  Murphy is the showrunner. Scott Stewart (Legion) directed the pilot while Michael Nankin is supervising producer/director.
