US pilots 2013/14: ABC

This is the first of five round-ups detailing the drama pilots ordered by the big five US networks for consideration for the 2013/14 season.

Each network subsequently announces which pilots have been ordered to series during their individual Upfronts presentation in May.

First up is ABC, which has ordered 12 drama pilots:




An unhappily married female photographer has an affair with the lawyer of a powerful family. However, when he defends a murder suspect being prosecuted by her husband, events spiral out of control.

From ABC Studios, David Zabel, Rob Golenberg and Alon Aranya executive produce.

Big Thunder

Based on the Disney theme park attraction, a brilliant 19th Century New York doctor is offered the chance to move to a frontier mining town run by a mysterious tycoon.

From ABC Studios, Chris Morgan executive produces.


A police officer-turned-lawyer plays the system for his clients while battling his demons and trying to win back his ex-wife.

From Sony Pictures Television, the executive producer is David Shore (House).


A soap set in the present day that unites characters including Dracula, Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde.

From ABC Studios and Mark Gordon Co, the executive producer is Mark Gordon. It is written by Matt Lopez.


A workplace drama centred on two brothers who head a unique agency designed to attack their clients’ problems using the real science of human motivation and manipulation.

From 20th Television, the executive producers are Keith Redman and Kyle Killen, who also writes.

Killer Women

Based on the Argentine series Mujeres Asesinas, the story follows the only woman in the male-dominated world of Texas Rangers.

From ABC Studios, Electus and Latin World Entertainment, the executive producers are Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Martin Campbell. Hannah Shakespeare writes.

Lucky 7

Based on the UK drama The Syndicate, Lucky 7 tells the story of a group of employees of a New York service station who win the lottery.

Produced by ABC Studios and Amblin Television, it is executive produced by David Zabel, Jason Richman, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Steven Spielberg.

Murder in Manhattan

A dramedy set in New York City about a mother-daughter team of amateur detectives.

Maria Maggenti, Ryan Reynolds, Jonathon Komack Martin, Allan Loeb and Steven Pearl executive produce this project from ABC Studios and DarkFire.


When his wife is imprisoned overseas, a man enters a world of political intrigue and dangerous alliances in a bid to win her freedom.

ABC Studios is producing with executive producer Martin Campbell and writer Chris Black.

The Returned

Based on a novel by Jason Mott, the lives of people living in the same town change forever when their dead loved ones return to life.

From writer/executive producer Aaron Zelman and executive producers JoAnn Alfano, Jon Liebman, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, it is produced by ABC Studios, Brillstein Entertainment and Plan B.


Set in the Marvel Comics world, this drama features the secret intelligence organisation that has appeared in recent big screen adventures including Iron Man, Thor and Avengers Assemble.

Produced by ABC Studios and Marvel TV, Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen are writer/executive producers alongside executive producers Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.


A soap about rival families living in the Californian city of Venice.

The executive producers are Byron Balasco, McG, Peter Johnson and Ilene Chaiken, who is also showrunner. Warner Bros Television and Wonderland Sound and Vision produce.
