US cable channel FX is pushing ahead with its forthcoming pilot project Tyrant after securing a director.
In his television directing debut, Academy Award winner Ang Lee (Life of Pi) will helm the pilot, which will be produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions.
The story follows an American family that is drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation.
Tyrant was created by Gideon Raff and developed by his Homeland producing partner Howard Gordon with Craig Wright (Six Feet Under). Raff wrote the script out of Teakwood Lane, Gordon’s label at 20th Century Fox Television.
Gordon, Radd and Wright are executive producers in association with Israel’s Keshet Broadcasting. Lee is also an executive producer.
If FX places a series order, Wright will also become showrunner.
Production is due to begin this summer.
Fox 21, based within 20th Century Fox Television, produces Homeland for Showtime, Sons of Anarchy with FX Productions for FX, and Lifetime’s forthcoming Witches of East End.
FX Productions is also behind Justified, The Americans and upcoming drama The Bridge, all for FX.
