Hallmark’s Heart Calls

Hallmark Channel in the US has greenlit its second original primetime series.

When Calls the Heart will debut with a two-hour TV movie on October 5, which will serve as an introduction to the ten-episode series that follows in January 2014.

It is based on Janette Oke’s Canadian West book series about a young teacher accustomed to high society who finds her first job is in a prairie town in the Western Frontier.

When Calls the Heart is produced by Believe Pictures, Jordan Films and Brad Krevoy Television. Brad Krevoy, Brian Bird, Michael Landon Jr, Roman Viaris, Francisco Gonzalez and Jimmy Townsend executive produce with producers Laurette Bourassa and David Kappes.

Hallmark’s first original scripted series, Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, based on the book series Cedar Cove by Debbie Macomber and starring Andie MacDowell, is due to debut in July.

Crown Media Holdings-owned Hallmark is also developing two more scripted pilots.

My Gal Sunday is based on a book of short stories by Mary Higgins Clark about a husband and wife crime-solving team, while Dead Letters, about an elite team of lost mail detectives, is being developed by Martha Williamson.
