HBO plays new Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones, the epic fantasy drama based on George RR Martin’s novels, has been renewed for a fourth season by US cable channel HBO.

The renewal comes just days after the third season premiere on Sunday, March 31 that averaged a series high of 4.4 million viewers.

In comparison, the season two debut drew 3.9 million viewers.

The story is set on the continent of Westeros, interweaving several storylines including the battle for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

Game of Thrones’ fourth season is likely to mirror its ten-episode third season run and will debut in 2014.

It is executive produced by David Benioff, DB Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive produced by Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, George RR Martin and Vanessa Taylor; and produced by Chris Newman and Greg Spence.
