Syfy Upfronts unveil new series

US cable network Syfy has announced a host of new scripted projects in production and development, including projects with Jamie Foxx, Robert Zemeckis, Bryan Fuller and Gale Ann Hurd.



New series include an untitled Jamie Foxx project, with Foxx executive producing, writing and directing a 5×30′ horror anthology that tells creepy morality tales with themes including envy, jealousy and superficiality. Troy Miller will executive produce through Dakota Pictures, which is producing with Universal Cable Productions. It will premiere in October.

Previously announced series Helix is about a team of scientists who investigate a possible disease outbreak in an Arctic research facility and find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation. From Sony Pictures Television, Lynda Obst Pictures and Tall Ship Productions, writer Cameron Porsandeh executive produces with Ronald D Moore, Steven Maeda and Lynda Obst.

High Moon is a new pilot, from Universal Cable Productions, about what happens when the countries of Earth establish colonies to mine the Moon’s resources and find a new form of life. It is written by Jim Danger Gray, who co-executive produces with Bryan Fuller, Cary Granat, Steve Granat, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

Ringworld, based on the novel by Larry Niven, is being developed as a four-hour miniseries about a team of explorers who travel to the far reaches of space to investigate an alien artefact – an artificial habitat the size of one million Earths. It is adapted by writer Michael Perry and is coproduced by MGM Television and Universal Cable Productions. The executive producers are William S Todman and Edward Milstein.

Other longform developments include Childhood’s End, based on the Arthur C Clarke novel about a peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious Overlords, whose arrival ends all war and turns the planet into a near-utopia. It will be produced by Universal Cable Productions and executive produced by Michael De Luca.

Eyes of the Dragon, adapted from Stephen King’s novel, is set in a kingdom in turmoil following the death of the king as several suitors battle to be his successor. From Universal Cable Productions and Ostar Productions, it is written by Michael Taylor and Jeff Vintar, with Taylor executive producing with Bill Haber.

Darkfall is set in a world where modern forms of power and technology fail, giving rise to the use of magic. From Universal Cable Productions and The Jim Henson Company, it is written by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris.

These join the previously announced longform development project Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High Castle from Scott Free Productions, Frank Spotnitz’s Headline Pictures and FremantleMedia International.

Syfy also has several series in development.

No Place follows the residents of a high-tech gated community who find themselves cut off from the rest of reality and must battle to survive as resources dwindle and tensions rise. From Fox Television Studios, Top Cow and Circle of Confusion, it is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Matt Hawkins, Marc Silvestri and writers John Brancato and Mike Ferris.

Dominion (working title, formerly Legion) is set 20 years after evil angels descend from heaven, a saviour must protect Vega, the last remaining stronghold of humanity. Based on the movie Legion, produced by Bold Films, the series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive producers Vaun Wilmott, Scott Stewart and David Lancaster.

Set against an intergalactic war, Orion focuses on a female relic hunter who tracks down valuable artefacts while trying to piece together her past. From Universal Cable Productions, it is executive produced by writers Ron Milbauer and Terri Hughes Burton, George Krstic and Ryuhei Kitamura.

Sojourn is a detective series in space where an investigator is called to solve a murder on a starship. From Lionsgate, it is produced by Jason Blum and written by Phil Levens.

Clandestine sees a clan of bandits, left for dead by Coalition forces, take refuge in a derelict starship and pretend to be Coalition officers while continuing their criminal ways. From Universal Cable Productions, Todd Stashwick and Dennis Calero are writing the show, which is executive produced by Gale Ann Hurd and John Shiban.

Infinity tells the story of a young billionaire who uses his spaceship to greet an alien armada heading for Earth but is sent through a wormhole into uncharted regions of space and must find a way back home. Berman/Braun Television and Universal Television is producing from a script by Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

Silver Shields follows a farm boy who follows his murdered father into the local police force to solve the mystery of his father’s death and finds a big city filled with orcs and other magical creatures. Universal Cable Productions is behind the show, which is produced by Aaron Kaplan and executive produced by writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe.

In Shelter, a meteorite heading towards Earth forces 30,000 hand-picked humans to live underground and start a new society. Writers Bruce Joel Rubin and Ari Rubin executive produce for Universal Cable Productions.

Also on Syfy’s slate is an untitled Alfonso Moreno project, in which a meteorite strikes a plane and the only two survivors have no recollection of their actions. They must go on the run from the government and try to find out what happened to prove their innocence. Moreno and Ross Fineman executive produce for Fox Television Studios.
