The CW picks up The Originals

The CW has ordered its first new series for 2013/14 and ordered new seasons of two additional dramas.

The US broadcast network has given the greenlight to The Originals, which is a spin-off of its hit supernatural series The Vampire Diaries. The pilot was aired on the channel last night.

Julie Plec, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo executive produce for Warner Bros Television, CBS Television Studios and Alloy Entertainment.

The CW has also given a second season to Beauty and the Beast and a third season to Hart of Dixie.

Beauty and the Beast is about a homicide detective who years earlier was saved from her mother’s murderers by a mysterious beast.

It is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Take 5 Productions and Whizbang Films with executive producers Sherri Cooper, Jennifer Levin, Brian Peterson, Kelly Souders, Gary Fleder, Bill Haber, Paul J Witt, Tony Thomas, Ron Koslow, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.

Hart of Dixie stars Rachel Bilson as a surgeon who swaps big city life in New York to become a GP in a small community in Alabama.

It is from Bonanza Productions in association with Fake Empire, Warner Bros Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Leila Gerstein, Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Len Goldstein.

The network has previously given advance orders to freshman Arrow, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.

The CW will announce its full 2013/14 schedule, including new and returning series, at its Upfronts presentation next month.
