Channel 5 in the UK has acquired rights to Australian prison drama Wentworth.
The deal, with distributor FremantleMedia International, sees the broadcaster pick up the 10×60′ series, which is a reimagining of the classic drama Prisoner Cell Block H (known as Prisoner down under).
This new version takes viewers inside Wentworth Correctional Centre where they bear witness to inmates’ personal struggles within the violent, dangerous environment of a modern prison.
Wentworth is produced by FremantleMedia Australia for Foxtel’s SoHo channel and will premiere in May this year. It has also been pre-sold to TVNZ in New Zealand.
Channel 5 also recently bought two seasons of Irish broadcaster RTE’s crime drama Love/Hate (both 10×60′), which is produced by Octagon Films and sold by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
