Starz shines greenlight on Outlander

US premium cable network Starz is continuing its commissioning spree after greenlighting Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels.

The channel has partnered with Sony Pictures Television for a 16-episode season, which will be on air in 2014.

Spanning romance, science fiction, history and adventure, Outlander tells the story of a married combat nurse from 1945 who is swept back in time to 1743.

Ronald D Moore (Battlestar Galactica) and Jim Kohlberg will executive produce the series, which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company and Left Bank Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Earlier this month, Starz ordered Power to series and began development of Monsters of God.
