Bad Santa star Billy Bob Thornton will take the lead in the forthcoming small screen adaptation of Fargo.
The 10-part series, commissioned by US cable channel FX, is due to begin production this fall ahead of its debut in spring 2014.
Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, a rootless, manipulative man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction.
However, in a split from the film, the series will feature an all-new “true crime” story, with a new case and new characters, all entrenched in the trademark humor of the film.
Fargo, based on the film of the same name by Joel and Ethan Coen, has been adapted for television by writer Noah Hawley.
It is produced by FX Productions and MGM Television. The executive producers are the Coens, Warren Littlefield and Geyer Kosinski.
MGM Television will handle worldwide distribution of the series outside of the US and Canada.
