Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott are partnering for a new BBC One drama.
Taboo (8×60′), created by Steven Knight, is about a rogue adventurer (Hardy) who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to see the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations – Britain and America.
Set in 1813, it is produced by Scott Free Films with Hardy Son & Baker for BBC One and Sonar Entertainment. The executive producers are Scott, Hardy, Knight, Liza Marshall, Kate Crowe and Dean Baker.
Taboo is based on an original story by Hardy and his father Chips Hardy, who is a consulting producer.
Sonar Entertainment is distributing the series outside the UK.
Taboo will begin shooting in the UK in January 2015.
