Screen Australia is contributing funding for four new television dramas commissioned by broadcasters down under.
Molly, from M4 Entertainment for Seven Network, is based on the life of Australian music aficionado Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum. It is produced by John Molloy and executive produced by Michael Gudinski and Mark Morrissey. The writers are Matt Cameron and Liz Doran. Mushroom Pictures are handling sales.
The Principal, from Essential Media & Entertainment for SBS, is a gritty adult drama that revolves around a high school in Sydney’s tough south-west where life’s lessons are more often handed down on the streets than in the classroom. Written by Kristen Dunphy and Alice Addison, it is produced by Ian Collie. SBS Distribution and DCD Rights are overseeing sales.
Science-fiction series Project CM (working title), from Goalpost Pictures and Pukeko Pictures for ABC, sees two brothers at crossroads as a community struggles to co-exist with non-human creatures living amongst them. The producers are Rosemary Blight, Ryan Griffen, Angela Littlejohn, and Lauren Edwards; the executive producers are Sally Riley, Kylie du Fresne, Ben Grant, Martin Baynton, and Adam Fratto; and the writers are Jon Bell, Jonathan Gavin, and Michael Miller. Entertainment One is handling domestic sales, with Red Arrow International taking global rights.
Secret City, from Matchbox Pictures for Foxtel, is set amid rising tensions between China and America when a political journalist pursues a long-buried secret, leading to assassination attempts, suicide and murder. It is produced by Joanna Werner and executive produced by Penny Chapman. The writers are Belinda Chayko, Matt Cameron, Marieke Hardy, Alice Addison, Tommy Murphy, Kris Mrksa, and Greg Waters. Universal Media Studios International has sales rights.
