The Living and The Dead rises on BBC One

The creators of Life on Mars are behind a new drama for BBC One.

The Living and The Dead (6×60′), written by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, tells the story of a farmer who is obsessed with proving the existence of the afterlife at a time when his community stands on the point between its traditional past and industrial future.

Set in Somerset, England, in 1888, it is produced by BBC Wales Drama in association with Monastic Productions. It is coproduced by BBC America, which will air the series in the US.

The executive producers are Pharoah, Graham, Faith Penhale, and Katie McAleese.

It will be distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide.

Filming will begin next year.
