Netflix has ordered its first original UK drama – The Crown.
Described as the “gripping, decades-spanning inside story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who shaped Britain’s post-war destiny”, it is inspired by West End play The Audience.
Each season of The Crown will explore the political rivalries and personal intrigues across a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, exploring the delicate balance between her private world and public life.
Season one will begin with a 25-year-old Princess faced with the daunting prospect of leading the most famous monarchy in the world while forging a relationship with the domineering, war-hardened Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The Crown is written by Peter Morgan, and directed by Stephen Daldry. It is produced by Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television. Morgan, Daldry and Andy Harries executive produce with Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw.
The ten-part series will launch in all Netflix territories in 2016.
