El Rey cancels Matador

El Rey Network has cancelled one of its original dramas, Matador, despite previously ordering a second season.

The drama starred Gabriel Luna as a DEA agent who goes undercover as a professional soccer player.

Matador is created by Roberto Orci, Dan Dworkin, Jay Beattie and Andrew Orci, with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Dworkin and Beattie executive producing with Heather Kadin of K/O Paper Products, Rodriguez, John Fogelman, and Cristina Patwa.

The show’s run in the US was enough to earn a second season but poor international sales meant it was untimately cancelled.

An El Rey statement said: “Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.”
