VH1 is moving deeper into the scripted arena by ordering new TV movie The Breaks (working title).
Based on Dan Charnas’ book The Big Payback, it chronicles three friends united by their love of hip-hop as they work to make their mark in the music industry in 1990s New York City.
It is written and directed by Seith Mann, who executive produces with Charnas, Susan Levison, Bill Flanagan, and Maggie Malina.
Filming is due to begin in spring this year ahead of its debut in the autumn.
The Breaks marks VH1’s third TV movie, following 2013’s CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and 2014’s Drumline: A New Beat.
And depending on its success, the film could then serve as a feature-length pilot for a subsequent series.
