Thirteen years after the FBI agents ended their investigation into all things paranormal, US network Fox has ordered a new six-part event series.

Production is due to begin this summer, though an air date has not yet been confirmed.

Creator Chris Carter will oversee the new season, which will contain six new stories.

Carter executive produces for 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions.

The X-Files first debuted in September 1993, running for nine seasons and making household names of FBI agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny).
