BBC One sets up The Moorside Project

BBC One will go behind the headlines with a two-part drama about the public reaction to the disappearance of a schoolgirl.

Shannon Matthews was just nine when she vanished from her home on the Moorside estate in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, in February 2008.

She was found 24 days later at the home of Michael Donovan, who was later jailed alongside the girl’s mother for kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

In The Moorside Project (working title), the team behind award-winning Appropriate Adult will now reveal how a group of ordinary women brought their community together to find the missing girl – and the impact when it was revealed the disappearance was faked with the knowledge of her mother.

Produced by ITV Studios, writer Neil McKay executive produces with Jeff Pope.

Filming will begin later this year.
