Wayward Pines lands worldwide sales

M Night Shyamalan’s suspense thriller Wayward Pines has been sold to five new broadcasters.

The ten-part series has been picked up by City TV in Canada, Sky in New Zealand, Star World in India, DBS in Israel, and Filmbox in Romania, following deals with Fox International Channels Content Sales.

It will also air on new Canadian VoD platform Shomi.

They will all join Fox in the US, Fox International Channels worldwide, and Canal+ in France for the global launch on May 14, which will create the largest scripted drama launch in television history.

Wayward Pines stars Matt Dillon as a secret service agent who arrives in the titular town on a mission to find two missing federal agents. Each step closer to the truth takes him further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

The cast also includes Melissa Leo, Toby Jones, Terrence Howard, and Juliette Lewis.

Based on the book by Blake Crouch and developed for television by Chad Hodge, it is produced by FX Productions.

Shyamalan executive produces with Hodge, Donald De Line, and Ashwin Rajan.

Fox Germany heads to Wayward Pines

Fox in Germany will give new US mystery thriller Wayward Pines its debut next month.

The series – described as Twin Peaks meets The Truman Show – stars Matt Dillon as a secret service agent who visits the titular town looking for two missing colleagues. But slowly he comes to realise that the supposedly idyllic small town is not all it seems.

The ten-part series from director M Night Shyamalan will debut on Fox, available on Sky Deutschland in Germany and Austria, on May 14.

E4 hits right note with Empire

UK channel E4 has acquired new hit US drama Empire.



Created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, the series is set in the world of hip-hop music and follows the fictional life of a former street thug turned powerhouse music industry mogul Lucious Lyon.

When Lucious, a talented artist and CEO of Empire Entertainment, is diagnosed with a debilitating illness, he must choose one of his three sons to become heir of his successful music kingdom.

The cast includes Terence Howard, Bryshere Y Gray, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, and Taraji P Henson.

The 12×60′ drama, which debuted on Fox in January, is produced by Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

Timbaland and Jim Beanz are behind the show’s original soundtrack.

Empire is distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution.

Fox reopens The X-Files

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reunite for a new season of The X-Files.

Thirteen years after the FBI agents ended their investigation into all things paranormal, US network Fox has ordered a new six-part event series.

Production is due to begin this summer, though an air date has not yet been confirmed.

Creator Chris Carter will oversee the new season, which will contain six new stories.

Carter executive produces for 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions.

The X-Files first debuted in September 1993, running for nine seasons and making household names of FBI agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny).

Hulu takes Empire

US online platform Hulu has picked up rights to the hottest new US drama this season – Empire.



Hulu has acquired exclusive subscription VoD rights to the series, with the deal including current and future episodes.

It has already been renewed for a second season, which will air in 2015/16.

Empire is about the head of a music empire whose three sons and ex-wife all battle for his throne.

The cast includes Terrence Howard, Taraji P Henson, Malik Yoba, Jussie Smollett, Bryshere Gray, Trai Byers, Grace Gealey, Kaitlin Doubleday, and Gabourey Sidibe.

It is produced by Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, who executive produce with Brian Grazer, Ilene Chaiken and Francie Calfo.

The deal with Hulu was completed by distributor Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution.

Fox orders third trip to Sleepy Hollow

US network Fox has ordered a third season of its mystery drama Sleepy Hollow.

Season three will continue the adventures of resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), who pairs up with a present-day police lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) to save the town of Sleepy Hollow, and the world, from unprecedented evil.

The series was co-created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman. It is produced by K/O Paper Products in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

New showrunner Clifton Campbell (The Glades, White Collar) joins the series as an executive producer alongside Kurtzman, Orci, Wiseman, and Heather Kadin.

Sleepy Hollow season three will air in 2015/16.
