ITV returns to Selfridges

With its autumn schedule dominated by Downton Abbey, it appears ITV has found the drama to headline its New Year line-up.

When Mr Selfridge launched in the UK on January 6, the period drama naturally drew comparisons to the upstairs/downstairs affairs of those at Downton.

The shop-based saga, about the eponymous American moving his family to London where he opens the world’s grandest department store, scored more than nine million viewers on its debut, making it the most watched new ITV drama series since Scott & Bailey in May 2011.

After five episodes, it is averaging about 8.5 million viewers and ITV chiefs have moved quickly to order a second 10×60′ season to air in 2014.

Season two will be set on the dawn of World War One to coincide with the centenary of the Great War.

British historian Juliet Gardiner will join the ITV Studios production team as a historical advisor, while Lindy Woodhead, who wrote the book on which the series is based, continues as an advisor on retail history.

Andrew Davies (Bleak House) will be joined again by Kate Brooke (Case Sensitive) and Kate O’Riordan (The Bad Mother’s Handbook) as lead writers on the series.

Season two of Mr Selfridge will be produced by Cherry Gould (Lightfields) and executive produced by ITV Studios’ Kate Lewis alongside Davies, Brooke and O’Riordan.
